A sunglasses company that tweeted about Donald Trump's presidential win has been dumped as a sponsor by Mexican Formula One driver Sergio Perez.

Mexican Formula One driver Sergio Perez has terminated a contract with a personal sponsor after being offended by a tweet from the company in question in relation to Donald Trump winning the United States presidential election.

The Hawkers sunglasses company tweeted on Wednesday on their Spanish account that Mexicans may want to use their eyewear to hide their "crying eyes tomorrow when you are building the wall."

The remark was in reference to campaign announcements from Trump that he would build a wall between Mexico and the US if elected.

The Force India driver Perez was not amused and just hours later tweeted that he would terminate the contract, saying: "Very bad comment. Today I am breaking my relationship with HawkersMX. I will never let anyone make fun of my country!"

Hawkers later apologised for the tweet, speaking of "a grave mistake," and on Thursday still had Perez's name on their Twitter account.
