Police are guarding the scene of a shooting in Auckland but say there is no danger to the public.

A person was shot in the legs at a property in Rosamund Avenue, New Windsor, shortly after 2.30pm on Sunday.

Detective Sergeant Richard Sami said the scene was cordoned off and would be kept under guard overnight.

"Police want to reassure the public that there is no immediate danger to their safety," he says. 

He said positive lines of inquiry were being pursued, without elaborating.

One resident saw two men run out of a property and point a gun at a man who had got into a car, while another heard a man shout that someone was in his house and had shot him, the NZ Herald reports.

Police said the person shot in the legs with a handgun was taken to hospital.
