Ms Kelly received 108 of the public 375 nominations for the award by the time nominations closed on September 30. She died on October 14 and the award can't be made posthumously.

A panel decides the award at the end of the year from a short list.

An online petition to have her reinstated to the awards finalists had 1751 signatures on Saturday evening.

"If ever there were a case when the New Zealander who has died should remain eligible for this award it is this one," the petition says.

The award was won last year by former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw.
