Petty sharpens for Rio bid

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 25/06/2016

Christchurch middle distance runner Angie Petty has continued her build-up to the Rio Olympics with a solid finish over 800m at the World Challenge meeting in Madrid.

Petty, who has already been named in New Zealand's Olympic team, finished seventh in two minutes 01.92 seconds, well down on Cuban winner Rose Mary Almanza's 2:00.22.

Petty has a season's best of 2:01.70, and is looking to rediscover the form that earned her a gold medal at last year's world student games in 1:59.06.

Fellow Kiwi Brad Mathas, still chasing a Rio qualifying time, finished sixth in the men's 800m, his 1:48.58 well behind Luxembourg's Charles Grethen's winning 1:47.70.
