Petty solid in third-place finish

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 8/05/2016

Olympics-bound middle distance runner Angie Petty has finished third over 800m at the Golden Grand Prix in Japan.

Petty clocked a solid if unspectacular 2min 01.7sec at the Todoroki Stadium in Kawasaki behind Ethiopian Tigst Assefa's winning 2:00.66 and second-placed Australian Brittany McGowan.

The 24-year-old Christchurch runner has a personal best of 1:59.06 from her gold-medal winning effort at last year's Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea.

She is part of a 10-strong athletics squad already selected for the Rio Games in August, with a second instalment of athletes expected to be named in July.

New Zealand triple jumper Nneka Okpala, hunting an Olympic qualifying distance, finished second with 13.73m behind Russian Dana Veldakova's winning 13.76m.

Okpala, 28, has a personal best of 13.91m, but needs to better 14.10m to have any chance of earning Olympic selection.
