Pharmac boost not enough: opposition

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 4/05/2016

Opposition parties have welcomed Pharmac's funding boost but say it isn't enough.

The May 26 budget will give the drug-buying agency a $39 million increase as part of a $124m hike over four years.

Pharmac says the money will allow it to look at seven new drugs including Opdivo, a treatment for advanced melanoma.

Labour's health spokeswoman, Annette King, says while she welcomes the announcement, it doesn't go far enough.

"Pharmac has made it clear that 20 new drugs need to be funded but the announcement will see only seven drugs considered," she said.

"This is a rushed and half-hearted attempt at dampening down public concerns over the lack of anti-melanoma drug funding."

The Green Party's Kevin Hague called for the immediate release of Pharmac's advice on how much money it actually needs.

"This is a government with a history of doing just enough to take the pressure off, without actually solving the bigger problem," he said.
