Phoenix hold onto defender Parkhouse

Wellington Phoenix defender Adam Parkhouse will stay with the club for two more A-League seasons after impressing in an out-of-position role.

The Australian says he has already exceeded his expectations, beginning a maiden campaign with a desire to simply play 15 games which would have triggered a one-year extension.

Parkhouse has already played seven of nine games, all at left back, and stood out for his speed and effectiveness when going forward.

A former striker with NSW Premier League club Manly United, the 23-year-old has had no qualms with a change in role in the absence of All Whites fullback Tom Doyle, who is battling hamstring issues.

"Obviously, I would like to play further forward but the injury to Tom has given me an opportunity to add something else to my game," he said.

"When Doyley (Tom Doyle) comes back either this week or next week then so be it, but I feel I have something to add to the team further up the field."

Doyle is a possibility to return to action in Saturday's match against Western Sydney Wanderers in Auckland, casting a spotlight on the selection approach of interim co-coaches Chris Greenacre and Des Buckingham.
