Phoenix repeat warm-up win over Mariners

Wellington Phoenix have made it two pre-season wins over Central Coast Mariners in the space of a week after a 2-1 victory in Nelson.

Goals to Kosta Barbarouses and Roy Krishna gave extra bragging rights to the New Zealand club, who won 1-0 when the teams met in Sydney last Saturday.

They had the better of the match at Trafalgar Park, dominating much of the last hour after the Mariners were reduced to 10 men following the sending off of Jacques Faty. The Senegal international was shown a red card for a foul on Krishna to stop a lively Phoenix attack.

The score was 1-1 at that stage and remained that way at halftime before Krishna doubled the Phoenix score with a headed goal 4min after the break.

Phoenix striker Hamish Watson was also sent off, soon after coming on as a reserve, but his team held on to win and continue an impressive series of pre-season results.

The first half was more even, with Barbarouses opening the scoring in the 22nd minute from the penalty spot after his shot at goal hit the arm of defender Michael Neil.

Mariners striker Connor Pain levelled the score on the half-hour mark after slipping behind the Phoenix defence.

The Phoenix open their season at home to Melbourne City on October 8.
