Police also believe the boy is either of Maori or Pacific ethnicity after conducting a post mortem on his body on Friday morning.

A man walking his dog found the boy at a reserve on Mona Ave, in Mangere Bridge, on Thursday morning.

Police said preliminary results are inconclusive as to whether the boy was still-born, while forensic tests to identify his mother or father could take weeks to complete.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karen Bright said police were yet to identify the boy's mother and were concerned for her well-being.

"The items of clothing pictured were what the baby was wrapped in when he was found by a member of the public yesterday morning," she said.

"We hope that somebody will recognise the clothing, whether that be a family member or friend and that they will urgently get in touch with us."

Det Sen Sgt Bright said police were making enquiries in the Counties Manukau area, including by visiting local high-schools.

"We still have a number of unanswered questions, and we need members of the public to come forward and assist police," she said.
