Physical search off for man and daughter

The physical search for missing yachtie Alan Langdon and six-year-old daughter Que has been called off by police who say it's possible they've headed to Australia.

Mr Langdon, 46, and Que left Kawhia Harbour on December 17 in their 6.4m catamaran bound for the Bay of Islands but have had no contact with their family since.

It has emerged Que's parents have been in a custody battle and it is not the first time the pair have gone missing.

Mr Langdon's estranged wife, Nelson-based Ariane Wyler, earlier told Fairfax she had hired an Australian child recovery specialist to help find the pair.

Mr Langdon is a competent sailor and Interpol were advised of the case early on.

Police say they want to establish the pair are safe so they continue to appeal to the public for information.

That they may be headed overseas, including to Australia, is just one of many possible scenarios, police say.

"We're keeping an open mind," police say.
