South African prosecutors have been denied permission to pursue a tougher sentence for Oscar Pstorius.

South African prosecutors have been denied permission to appeal against Oscar Pistorius' six-year prison sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Judge Thokozile Masipa, who had issued the sentence, rejected arguments by the prosecution that another court could have imposed a different sentence.

"I am not convinced there are reasonable prospects of success" for an eventual appeal, Masipa told the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

The double-amputee athlete fired four shots at Steenkamp through a bathroom door in his Pretoria home on February 14, 2013.

Prosecutors argued during the court session that her sentence had been "shockingly and inappropriately lenient."
