The pit bull type animal, called Scarface, attacked three members of the family.

Police had to shoot the dog with a tranquilizer dart and a taser to bring it under control.

Brenda Guerrero, 52, was bitten by the pet at her home in Tampa, Florida, when she tried to put the jumper on him in her back yard.

When her husband Ismael Guerrero, 46, tried to pull the dog off her, it savaged him.

The couple’s son Antoine Harris, 22, then stabbed Scarface in the neck in a bid to stop the attack and all three were able to escape into their house, where two young were playing.

Eddy Durkin, from Tampa Police, said: “Officers responding said the dog was pretty aggressive. When they tasered the dog the dog was still pulling away and was able to release the prongs from the taser.”

Brenda and Ismael Guerrero were both taken to a hospital after last Friday’s attack. Mrs Guerrero’s injuries are believed to be serious, though not life threatening.

Neighbours said the family got the dog about a month ago.

One resident said: “You got kids here, kids there, and if that dog gets out the gate it could be dangerous to a kid, but he never attacked no one on the street as far as I know.”
