Pictures appeared to show the jet with flames spewing from the fuselage as it stood on the runway.

The pilot of the Argentina Airlines flight reported the engine fire late on Thursday night while the plane was on the tarmac preparing for takeoff, police said.

But Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Steve Coleman said when rescue trucks arrived they found no evidence of a fire.

The plane, which was headed for Buenos Aires, taxied back to the gate for further examination.

No injuries were reported.

A passenger on board a plane on the runway nearby took a picture of the aircraft with embers coming out.

She tweeted: "Yeah so I’m on the runway about to take off and another plane just landed next to us and it was on f**king fire like literal fire."
