Fire crews were stood down on the runway where the Dash 8 Aircraft radioed about making an emergency landing, an airport spokesman said.

The 30 passengers were being unloaded from the plane around 11.40 on Friday morning.

The Air New Zealand flight NZ8242 was flying from Palmerston North to Hamilton and there was an issue with a cockpit warning indicator, a Air NZ spokeswoman said.

"The indicator initially suggested a possible issue with the aircraft's landing gear on approach to Hamilton.

However, the issue appeared to be with the indicator light itself.

"The pilot requested emergency services be on standby for the landing as a precaution, however no assistance was required."

The aircraft will be inspected by engineers.
