NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 20/06/2016

The body of the sailor killed in a yacht rigging accident north of New Zealand has returned to the country.

Auckland man Nick Saull, 47, was killed on board the 20m Platino in rough weather 550km north of the country on Monday last week.

Another crewman, Steven Forno, 53, was not wearing a lifejacket when he was swept overboard and is now presumed dead.

Three surviving crew members were rescued by a container ship but retrieving Mr Saull's body and the yacht was left to the tug boat Sea Pelican.

The Sea Pelican, towing the Platino, arrived in Whangarei on Tuesday morning, police say.

It was met by a small group of family members, says Inspector Vaughn Graham.

Police are investigating the deaths on behalf of the coroner.
