Pledger signs three-year Breakers deal

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 9/04/2016

Alex Pledger has spurned approaches from other NBL clubs to sign a three-year extension with the New Zealand Breakers.

The Tall Blacks centre, who stands 2.13m, joins long-time team-mates Mika Vukona, Tom Abercrombie and Corey Webster in forming an impressive Kiwi spine to the roster.

The 29-year-old's signature is an enormous boost, says new head coach Paul Henare.

"He knows this club, lives and breathes our values and will only go on to dominate even more with a strong off-season under his belt," he said.

"He is the sort of player we can build a team around, I am delighted to announce his signing in the face of fierce opposition for his signature."

Part of all four NBL-winning Breakers teams, Pledger's minutes have been limited by foot problems over the last two seasons but he feels he is nearing full fitness and that his best form lies ahead.

The 29-year-old is playing strongly for the Southland Sharks in the domestic NBL.

"Right now, for the first time in what feels like forever playing injured and spending time below-strength, I have been able to rediscover my form and match fitness," he said.

"I am in my prime years, I am not too old, nor have I reached my peak."
