Prime Minister Bill English has laughed off US comedian John Oliver's assault on his spaghetti pizza.

Oliver, who regularly mocks New Zealand politicians on his show Last Week Tonight, has used his latest programme to ridicule Mr English over his home-made pizza which last month generated a national debate.

The prime minister sparked it by posting a selfie and a couple of snaps of the dinner he whipped up for his family - pizza slathered with tinned spaghetti - on his Facebook page.

Oliver used the shots, describing the meal as "revolting" and "garbage" and going on to suggest other bizarre pizza concoctions Mr English could try.

Mr English, who has previously said he doesn't find Oliver funny, was asked his reaction at his post-cabinet press conference on Monday.

"I'm not at all concerned about it," he said.

"It may assist New Zealand's international profile, and help tourism and trade, and even the relationship with the US."

And he still doesn't think Oliver is funny.

"Sometimes comedians strike gold and sometimes they don't - I hope he does better in the next round."
