Prime Minister Bill English will take in the first Super Rugby game to be played in Samoa during his visit to celebrate the nation's Independence Day this week.

As Samoa celebrates 55 years of independence, Mr English will also mark the same anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship with New Zealand.

"I am looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Tuilaepa and discussing a wide range of political and economic issues including the Pacific Islands Forum, which Samoa will host in September," Mr English said ahead of his trip from May 31 to June 3.

"Samoa is an important bilateral partner for New Zealand and we greatly value its leadership in the region."

Mr English will also meet government, private NGO and community sector representatives.

The Blues will play a "home" match against the Reds in Apia on Friday.
