If you're a Pokemon fan, Dunedin is the place to be.

The latest population figures from Statistics NZ have revealed there are 446,000 Pokemon in New Zealand with the highest density, 15 per 10,000 people, in Dunedin.

The city's Otago Harbour is a hotspot for water Pokemon while the cooler winter temperatures are attracting ice Pokemon, according to statistical analyst, Bridget Snodgrass.

"While Statistics NZ does not collect population information on Pokemon types, we believe this peak may be due to Dunedin's varied terrain attracting a wide range of Pokemon types," she said.

For those hunting the 6200 Pokemon active across the country at any given time, Auckland Central East has the best day and night hunting.

Wellington is a close second with Lambton Quay best in the day and Willis Street to Cambridge Terrace best at night.

Auckland has the largest Pokemon population overall, with 2100.
