Pokemon trainers capture car thief

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 1/09/2016

A group of aspiring Pokemon trainers have managed to catch more than a Pikachu while on a late-night hunt in Napier.

Police are praising a young group of Pokemon Go players for also capturing a masked man allegedly breaking into cars in Ahuriri on Wednesday night.

The group were on a hunt near the East Pier hotel at about 10pm when they heard a car alarm go off and saw a man in a "horror mask" run past them.

Following the 27-year-old man in their van, the trainers found the man allegedly trying to get into another car.

With no Pokeballs needed, one of the youths pinned him to the ground, while another called police.

Senior Sergeant David Sutherland said it was a "great catch".

"If it wasn't for this group of young people, then we would never have caught this guy," he said.

"They were brave enough to hold him till our staff arrived and we thank them for a job well done."

However, police say the best policy in similar situations is to call officers first before intervening.

"We don't want any good Samaritans getting hurt,"

The man will appear in Napier District Court next week.
