Four men accused of a multi-million dollar pokie machine fraud are to go on trial.

Michael O'Brien, his father Patrick O'Brien, Paul Max and another man with name suppression face charges of obtaining by deception in what's been labelled the biggest criminal case in the pubs and gaming sector.

Their trial starts in the High Court at Wellington on Monday.

The prosecution, by the Serious Fraud Office, resulted from an investigation into Blenheim-based Bluegrass Holdings, which operated 144 pokie machines at eight pubs around New Zealand.
