New Zealand Police and Waikato University are joining forces to establish a centre to improve the police's research capability.

The parties have signed a letter of intent to set up a Centre for Evidence-based Policing.

Police say evidence-based policing ensures their strategy, operations and tactics are based on the best possible evidence.

"The centre and the work it produces will, I know, prove to be a valuable resource for our staff and help us improve trust and confidence with the public," Police Commissioner Mike Bush said.

"Evidence will help us understand what works, what counts and what matters."

The agreement would be for six years and the focus of initial research projects would likely include victims, Maori and road policing.
