Police are appealing for witnesses to an Auckland crash in which a motorcyclist died while fleeing police.

Vinal Kavit Naidu, 31, was killed when he failed to take the Royal Oak roundabout, falling off his bike and parked hitting a vehicle at 1.15am on September 25.

Police said minutes earlier he had sped past a patrol car and a chase ensued, during which Mr Naidu is believed to have gone through a red light and nearly struck another car.

Officers now want to speak to that vehicle's driver.

"That car was travelling along Mount Albert road towards Mount Roskill and had stopped at the lights at Mt Albert/Hillsborough Road intersection," police said.

An investigation into the brief pursuit is ongoing.
