Detective Inspector Chris Cahill has been elected Police Association president, replacing Greg O'Connor.

Mr Cahill, who is based at Auckland City, won a contested election on Wednesday at the association's annual conference.

He has held every committee position within the association, including serving as a core negotiator on three salary negotiations, and being regional director and vice-president.

Mr O'Connor says he believes Mr Cahill will bring a high level of commitment and experience to the role,.

"He has shown himself to be a strong advocate for police as an association member and representative," he said.

"I am confident he will ensure that the voice of police officers will continue to be heard in the law and order environment."

Mr O'Connor is stepping down as president after 21 years in the role.
