A police car has been washed away in a flash flood amid heavy rain in eastern Auckland.

The car rapidly filled up with water during flooding on Wednesday morning as two officers were returning from a job along Clevedon-Kawakawa Bay Road, Counties Manukau South Area Commander Inspector Mark Rowbottom said.

The officers had to quickly abandon it before getting to higher ground and waiting to be rescued by the Fire Service.

Heavy rain has wreaked havoc across Auckland and the Coromandel, with conditions expected to ease in the afternoon, before worsening again on Thursday.
