Three people have been arrested after a police chase in North Canterbury ended in a car catching fire.

Police began a pursuit of a stolen car in Ohoka at about 11pm on Thursday, eventually laying down road spikes to stop the vehicle.

The chase came to a halt on Rangiora Woodend Road, where the three occupants tried to escape of foot, but were arrested by officers.

The stolen car then caught fire, although firefighters put the blaze out quickly, a police spokesman said.

Two men, 32 and 24, and a woman, 32, are due to appear in court on Friday, charged with reckless driving, stealing a car and not stopping for police.
