Detectives finally managed to solve the Peggy Knobloch mystery after the DNA of a dead neo-Nazi killer was found on her body.

The little girl's remains were found by mushroom hunters in July, just nine miles west of her house in Lichtenberg in central Germany.

She disappeared while walking home from school in 2001, aged nine.

Now, following tests, German investigators say that DNA matching that of Uwe Boehnhardt, who was a member of a neo-Nazi cell responsible for 10 murders, was found on a piece of material found in Peggy's grave.

He committed suicide in 2011 alongside Uwe Mundlos after police stumbled on the group.

The surviving member of the cell, Beate Zschaepe, is currently on trial for her alleged role in the killing of 10 people.

She has told a German court she no longer believes in the group's ideology and claims she wants to testify about the death of a girl.

Peggy disappeared on May 7, 2001 as she walked home from her primary school sparking a massive search with many comparing her disappearance to Madeleine McCann's, with the two girls also looking similar.

Her body was eventually found by someone looking for mushrooms.

A man with learning difficulties was jailed for life in 2004 after he told police he had killed the girl but his conviction was overturned and he was released 10 years later.

Nobody has been charged since.
