Police have used dogs to track two men who sped away from a traffic stop in Lower Hutt on Saturday morning before crashing their stolen car and fleeing the scene.

Police had earlier spotted the car in Taita around 4am in the company of another stolen vehicle.

But when signalled to stop, both cars sped off before again being spotted on State Highway 2.

"After a very short period of driving at speed one of the vehicles crashed near the Petone overbridge and the driver and front passenger left the vehicle, leaving the other two passengers in the car," a police spokeswoman said.

"These passengers have moderate injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment."

A police dog team located and arrested the driver and front passenger shortly after.

However, the second stolen car and its occupants are still on the run.
