A suspicious package blown up by a bomb squad in central Dunedin last week was not an explosive device and the person who left it there has been found, police say.

The discovery of the package near vacant building on Moray Place on Friday prompted the evacuation of a supermarket and offices in the busy commercial area

A Christchurch-based Defence Force bomb squad was called in to deal with the object.

Police now say they can confirm it was not an explosive device.

"From what our investigation has established to date, we can assure the community that there was no danger to members of the public."

They said the person who had placed it at the scene had been identified and interviewed by officers.

"As part of the ongoing investigation into this incident, police will determine if there is any criminal liability."
