The investigation into one of two sexual assault cases that happened on the same night in Dunedin has ended with police taking the matter no further.

The incident happened on Leith Way on March 17, when a woman walking north towards University College student accommodation was reported to have been pushed and sexually assaulted.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis says police have spoken to both parties and a clearer picture has emerged of what happened.

He says analysis of CCTV footage confirms that, while an incident took place, the matter will not be further examined or progressed.

"This position has been explained to both parties and they accept and support this decision," he said on Wednesday.

Det Sen Sgt Croudis said the investigation into an earlier case that night at a Dundas Street house was continuing, with police awaiting forensic results.

In that incident, a man is alleged to have walked into a room between 8pm and 8.30pm and sexually assaulted two 19-year-old women.
