An officer's rifle magazine that was lost after the execution of a search warrant in Napier has been found, police say.

Inspector Matt Broderick, the Acting Hawke's Bay Area Commander, says it was located on Marine Parade on Thursday morning.

Early indications are that it was not tampered with.

Police have begun a policy, practice and procedure review into how the M4 Bushmaster magazine, which contained ammunition, went astray on Wednesday.

Insp Broderick had previously described the officer's error in losing the item as "regrettable".

After a search operation in Trinity Crescent, the officer had placed magazine on the roof of his car before driving off towards Hastings.
