Police have completed a search of an area in a Hawke's Bay town as part of a homicide investigation after the death of man found unconscious and badly beaten.

Mark Beale, 45, was found in Haumoana on Monday morning and died after being taken to hospital.

Inspector Mike Foster says a specialist search group has completed its task and the scene has also been examined forensically.

He says a post-mortem examination is being carried out in Wellington on Wednesday.

"Information being provided by the public is heartening, and we encourage anyone who hasn't spoken to us to come forward," he said.

"We would still like to speak with all people who may frequent or fish at Haumoana on a regular basis, or from time to time."

Insp Foster said they could provide the investigation with important information, whether they were in the area on Sunday or not.
