Police have nabbed a man they allege took police uniforms and gear from the Te Awamutu police station.

They say the 24-year-old arrested on Thursday, who remains in custody, is responsible for a spate of burglaries and thefts in the Te Awamutu area earlier this week, including the burglary of the police station on Tuesday night.

He'll be facing a range of dishonesty charges including five counts of burglary and four of unlawful interference with a motor vehicle.

They have recovered stab-resistant body armour, two batons, OC spray, handcuffs, a police identity card and various items of police uniform.

A 22-year-old female has also been arrested and charged with receiving stolen goods.

It was as a direct result of information from the public about suspicious behaviour in the Te Awamutu township that police were able to apprehend someone, says Inspector Naila Hassan, the area commander.

Police were sure a spike in offending had abated since the man's arrest.
