A rifle magazine containing ammunition has been lost after a police officer placed it on the roof of his patrol car in Napier and drove off towards Hastings.

Police want the public's help to locate the M4 Bushmaster magazine.

Inspector Matt Broderick, the Acting Hawke's Bay Area Commander, says it was lost after police executed a search warrant at an address in Trinity Crescent.

He says officers were carrying firearms during the initial stages of the operation.

When it ended, an officer inadvertently placed the rifle magazine on the roof of his car before driving off.

Insp Broderick says anyone finding the magazine, which is black and has a curved plastic shape, should return it to the nearest police station or call 111.

"The error is regrettable and should not have occurred," he said.

He said police had begun a policy, practice and procedure review, as was common after incidents of this sort.
