The disappearance of a Chinese visitor who hasn't been seen for five days is causing increasing concern, Auckland police say.

Ling Fang Mai, 42, arrived in the city last Wednesday afternoon as part of a tour group.

After a trip up Mt Eden with the group, she checked into her Parnell hotel about 8pm.

She told her room-mate she was going for a walk but didn't return and was reported missing to police on Thursday night.

She had been due to leave Auckland on Friday night, but didn't arrive for her flight.

Detective Inspector Aaron Pascoe says police have made inquiries with Customs and Immigration but there are no indications where she is.

He says she hasn't left the country and her Chinese cellphone is switched off.

"Ling Fang's family back home are obviously very worried - she is a widow with a teenage child," he said.

"This is out of character for her and we are increasingly concerned by her disappearance."

When she left the hotel room, she was wearing a black top, blue jeans, a dark three-quarter length jacket and black sport shoes with distinctive fluoro yellow stripe and soles.
