A cyclist who died in a road accident on the West Coast coast was a local student.

He was 16-year-old Hokitika resident River Caldwell, who police say was struck by a northbound vehicle.

The incident happened on State Highway 6, north of Hokitika, about 7am on Wednesday.

Police say they are working to establish exactly what happened.

They say that, while a truck and a car were at the scene, each vehicle's involvement in the crash is still subject to investigation.

Both lanes of the highway have been reopened.
