A teenager who died after she sped off when ordered by police to stop and crashed her car into a Rotorua stream has been named.

She was Moana Titihuia Matthews, 17, of Rotorua.

Police said their thoughts were with her family.

The crash happened on Saturday night and the driver died at the scene. Three passengers in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

Inspector Bruce Horne said police had seen the car being driven through an intersection erratically and at speed, and they tried to stop it, but the driver sped off.

Soon after, the driver failed to take a moderate bend and the car went over a bank.

Police are investigating the crash, which has also been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
