He was Ross Leslie Hallgarth, 54, of Hastings.

Mr Hallgarth was the driver of one of two vehicles in the incident on York Road in Hastings around 11am on Saturday and he died at the scene.

Police say they are continuing to try to find the other vehicle.

It is described as being a colour like dark green, from the 1990s, in rough condition and possibly a Honda Accord.

Sergeant Paul Ormerod says several people have called police since an appeal for information went out, but they are still trying to local the driver.

"Police are very keen to speak to this person," he said.

"We encourage them, and anyone else with information which may be of interest, to contact us immediately."
