A man who died after his boat capsized off the coast of Hokitika had been out testing the craft, police say.

He was 48-year-old Kerry John Apperley, police said on Monday.

They said his boat tipped over in rough conditions on Saturday afternoon, when waves reached heights of up to four metres.

Mr Apperley and his son, who were both wearing life jackets and wetsuits, attempted to swim the 100 metres to shore.

His son made it to shore, where he was treated for shock, but Mr Apperley did not survive.
