Police divers have recovered the body of a man from the Waikato River.

The man was named as Brent Christoffersen, 32, of Masterton.

Police said on Thursday that the death was not thought to be suspicious and would be referred to the coroner.

They were alerted around 5pm on Wednesday after a man was seen in the water near Huka Falls.

With onlookers losing sight of the man as he was swept along, Coastguard New Zealand assisted police in the search for him, before his body was discovered down river.
