Police have named the man who died on the way to hospital after being shot once in the shoulder by an officer.

He was Christopher Wayne Brown, 44, of the wider Porirua area.

Superintendent Steve Kehoe, Acting District Commander for Wellington, says police are continuing to investigate the incident.

He says it is one of several investigations under way, including one by the Independent Police Conduct Authority.

The incident happened early on Sunday.

Talking earlier about the case, Supt Kehoe said the man had been involved in a domestic dispute in Waikanae and his car was found around Mana Esplanade, about 35km south.

Around 12.30am, while carrying a machete, he approached a police officer alone in a police car.

Supt Kehoe said the information he had was that the officer acted professionally, appropriately and in accordance with policy.

The man was given first aid at the scene and paramedics were called.

Police had recovered a machete and there was an air rifle in the man's vehicle.
