Police officer assaulted in Auckland

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 27/05/2016

A police officer has been assaulted and knocked unconscious by two men during a routine traffic stop in Auckland.

The police dog handler pulled a car over on Bairds Rd, Otahuhu at about 3.50am on Saturday, and as he spoke to the driver, two men got out of the car and assaulted him, police say.

He was knocked unconscious before a passing truck driver scared off his attackers, who fled in a green Toyota Altezza.

A passing ambulance took the officer to hospital, where he was treated for moderate injuries.

His attackers are described as average height and build, and one wore a black t-shirt with white writing on it, police say.
