Police officers bashed with pipe in Huntly

Two police officers have been injured after being attacked by a man wielding a metal pipe in Huntly.

The pair both needed hospital treatment after the early morning attack o Wednesday and one remains in Waikato Hospital.

They had stopped a car on Paki Street after its driver initially refused to pull over and used pepper spray and a Taser when the man behind the wheel became aggressive and assaulted the officers.

A male passenger then attacked the officers from behind with the pipe and both suffered injuries which were described as moderate.

"Police work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and acts of violence like this against our officers are unacceptable," said Inspector Naila Hassan.

The passenger fled the scene, but police know who he is. The 30-year-old driver was arrested and will appear in Hamilton District Court charged with with assault and driving offences.
