Police are searching for an armed man after a shooting in Christchurch, but say there are no fears to public safety.

Police were called to a Hei Hei property on Monday afternoon after reports that a man had been shot in the leg.

He was later taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A second man had left the property on foot, resulting in two nearby schools, St Bernadette's and Hornby High, being placed temporarily in lock-down.

That person is described as Maori or Pacific Islander in his 20s, and wearing a red-and-blue checked shirt and jeans.

No weapon has been found and police are seeking information into that person's whereabouts.

Police said the man they were looking for should not be approached, but they also believed there was no reason for the public to be concerned for their safety.

They said the two men were known each, and they believed the incident was an isolated one.
