A woman on a bicycle robbed a Palmerston North store before assaulting an owner outside, leaving him with injuries that needed hospital treatment, police say.

The incident at the West End Store at the corner of Botanical Street and College Street happened just after 6.30pm on Wednesday.

Detective Sergeant Dave Thompson says the woman arrived on bicycle from the city end of College Street, entered the shop, threatened a female owner and demanded money.

After taking cash, the offender left the store and was confronted by a male store owner on the street.

The man was assaulted and the offender fled by bike down College Street towards the city centre.

The offender was described as 25 to 30, of medium-to-large build, 1.60m tall and with black hair.

She was wearing a dark sweat shirt and light-coloured pants.

Det Sgt Thompson says the store is on a busy intersection and it is likely someone would have seen the offender approaching or leaving the scene, or witnessed the assault.
