Homicide detectives are investigating the death of the 25-year-old man, who is yet to be formally identified.

His body was discovered by police in the car in Fishbone Park, Otangarei after reports of shots just after 11pm on Tuesday.

Witnesses have described a person running from the scene - possibly with a gun - as medium build, 170cm to 180cm tall and wearing a black hoodie and light coloured track pants.

No weapons have turned up in a police search on Wednesday and the person fleeing the scene has yet to be found.

Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said there did not appear to be an on-going risk to the community.

Forensic teams have been called from Auckland and were expected to finish examining the scene on Wednesday night.

A post-mortem examination is set to be carried out on Thursday.
