A 12-year-old boy has driven a stolen car 115km from Whangarei to Puhoi until he was stopped by police road spikes.

The boy took a car from his caregiver and was spotted driving it south of Whangarei about 2am on Thursday, says Inspector Kai Shao.

Police followed the car at a distance, without attempting to stop it, for some time because there weren't many other vehicles on the road and the boy was such an inexperienced driver.

Near Warkworth, police signalled to the 12-year-old to stop but he kept going.

Spikes were used to stop the car near Puhoi.

"This incident had potential to end very differently due to the age and inexperience of the driver," Insp Shao told the Northern Advocate.

The boy was taken into custody and has been referred to Youth Aid and Oranga Tamariki, the Ministry for Vulnerable Children.
