Police talk boy down from school roof

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 3/05/2016

It didn't take a lot of talking to get a six-year-old to come down from a school roof in Hastings once he saw uniformed officers, police say.

Officers were called to Riverslea School on Tuesday afternoon after a boy snuck onto the roof and refused to come down for about 45 minutes when asked by teachers.

Senior Sergeant Dan Foley said police were there for less than 20 minutes and didn't have much trouble changing the boy's mind once they arrived.

"Six-year-old kids listen to a policeman in a uniform, generally," he said.

Sgt Foley said while it wasn't something officers had to do every day, police were more than happy to help resolve a situation that could have been dangerous.
