NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 13/06/2016

A man has been tasered by Auckland police after allegedly charging at officers armed with a screwdriver.

The man was hit with the 50,000-volt stun gun in New Lynn on Sunday night.

Officers were called to a report of two men breaking into a vehicle outside the Lynn Mall, says Senior Sergeant Matt Laurenson.

They chased the pair, who split up.

"At one stage, one of the offenders allegedly charged at police with a screwdriver in his hand," Snr Sgt Laurenson said.

The officer was forced to fire his Taser at the 20-year-old, he said.

The man was taken into custody and charged with behaving threateningly, possession of an offensive weapon and unlawful interference with a motor vehicle.

Police are still looking for the second man. He was described as wearing a black basketball type jumper or singlet, with the number 32 on the back.
