A drone.

A ban is in force against operating drones near the Port Hills in Christchurch as fire crews continue to battles fires there.

Police say they are concerned people have been using drones to photograph the blazes.

They say they can understand the appeal, but there is a major safety risk to helicopters helping to put out the fires.

The Civil Aviation Authority has enforced a restricted airspace over the area.

This effectively means members of the public are not allowed to operate a drone there.

The restriction is in place until 1pm on Friday, but could be extended.

Police say people caught using drones in the area could face charges.
